The Arch of Glory at Vadnagar

The magnificent Arch of Glory created by the rulers of the Solanki dynasty stands at Vadnagar in North Gujarat. This arch is considered to be a symbol of the richness of the peerless sculpture and architecture of Gujarat. The Solanki rulers had such arches built as memorials of their victories (in war). Such arches are found only in Gujarat. So they can be regarded as the unique brand mark of Gujarat.

The grand Arch of Glory at Vadnagar is built in sandstone. There are actually two arches each placed on two pillars on which are placed two arches with horizontal slabs. These arches and pillars are beautifully carved and engraved. All the pillars have beauiful sculptures, flowers and creepers as well as leaves are finely engraved. Human figures have also been created in stone. They are very proportionate and rhythmic in form. When one looks at the ornaments (carved in stone) worn by the human figures, they give one an idea of the prosperity of that era. Such arches are found in Gujarat at Kapadvanj. Shamlaji, Modhera, Valam and Pipudra. Some arches stand on two pillars and some others on four. The Arch of Glory at Vadnagar, which is a symbol of the cultural heritage of Gujarat, is really magnificent.
