- Urdu and Telugu are also the state languages of the newly formed state of Telangana

- India has 22 officially recognised languages since 1992.
- English is recognised as a subsidiary official language, though it used for official purposes along with Hindi.

- The 8th schedule was added to the Constitution, to indicate all the officially recognised languages.
- Tamil is the oldest and purest language of the Dravidian family.
- Bengali, the official language of West Bengal emerged as a separate language around 1000 CE.
- Sanskrit is the classical language of India. It is one of the oldest languages of the world.
- Rig Veda, one of the oldest book in Sanskrit was composed around 2000 B.C.E.
